Hemp Brick
We’re engineering carbon-negative bricks using processed hemp hurd. Designed for use in sustainable construction.
Canna-B-Africa drives industrial hemp R&D with partners across the globe — focused on cultivation, manufacturing and engineering to produce sustainable products or applications that drive positive environmental change.
Canna-B-Africa was founded in 2022 and secured a hemp permit from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) for licensed cultivation.
Hemp is a variety of Cannabis sativa grown for industrial use, with low THC and high levels of fiber, cellulose, lignin, protein, and oil.
We focus on industrializing hemp for sustainable applications like construction bricks, livestock feed, textiles, oils, and biodegradable products — while maintaining full legal compliance.
Canna-B-Africa develops hemp-based products for industrial sectors such as construction, livestock nutrition, and environmental sustainability. Research is conducted in collaboration with UJ-HERTS and global partners in Australia, USA, France, and Poland.

We're developing cattle feed using hempseed by-products.
We are developing biodegradable hemp-based product and packaging solutions, including fully compostable cups.
We are advancing the use of hemp in environmental restoration through targeted bioremediation and soil testing initiatives. Our research focuses on harnessing hemp’s natural properties to remove contaminants, improve soil health, and support land rehabilitation for sustainable agricultural and industrial use.
In collaboration with the University of Johannesburg Hemp Research and Technology Station (UJ-HERTS), Canna-B-Africa presented its hemp construction brick during the IBT Human Settlements Summit held in Nasrec.
The prototype brick represents a key step toward developing carbon-negative building materials using locally cultivated hemp. The innovation focuses on sustainability, insulation performance, and scalable manufacturing for the African construction sector.
During the summit, the research team had the opportunity to present the hemp brick concept to President Cyril Ramaphosa, demonstrating how hemp-based materials could contribute to future housing solutions and environmentally responsible infrastructure.
The presentation highlighted the potential of hemp to support green construction, agricultural development, and new industrial value chains across South Africa.
